our cloths and factories

Every garment is rather like a cake….there can be as many as 17 ingredients that go into it, that are sourced from all over the world:

  • all tweeds for our jackets is 100% wool, some sourced from the Borders, some of it is genuine Harris Tweed (as set out in the Harris Tweed Act of 1993), hand woven by the islanders of the Outer Hebrides and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides . Jackets that carry the Harris Tweed Orb certify the cloth source.
  • velvets come from the heart of Yorkshire's 'Bronte' country - a region renowned worldwide for providing high quality textiles.
  • linings are always 100% cotton, some sourced from the infamous Libertys of London, some from original quirky French cotton mills.
  • buttons are a particular obsession of Madeleine’s (lets not even talk about other fixations…) being sourced for their originality and beauty, particularly those hand crafted in Cornwall in ceramics on the autumn 2010 collection.
  • even the leather fastenings on some of the skirts are hand made by a local Master Saddler, with solid brass fixings….

Once the ingredients are selected they are sent to very select small workshops dotted around Europe and the UK, all of which have been personally visited (regularly) by Madeleine, who is on first name terms with almost every lady involved in the production. All garments are hand finished here in West Sussex by a team of skilled local seamstresses.
